About Counselling Therapy
Counselling therapy is the health profession in which a person uses mental health and human development principles, methods and techniques within a counselling relationship to assist another person with mental, emotional, physical, social, moral, educational, spiritual or career development and adjustment throughout the person's lifespan.
Counselling therapy may be conducted face-to-face, over the telephone, via video conferencing, or by email (with appropriate considerations for privacy and confidentiality). The client may be an individual, couple, family or group.
Counselling therapists may be specialized in specific areas of practice.
Out-of-Province Counselling Therapists
Counselling therapists from other provinces who want to work with clients in Prince Edward Island (PEI) through telepractice are subject to specific conditions to provide services without registering with the CCTPEI. They may practice in PEI without CCTPEI registration if they meet the following criteria:
- They do not advertise services in PEI.
- They serve a maximum of three PEI clients at any time.
- PEI clients make up less than 20% of their total client base.
If they wish to exceed these limits, practitioners must register with the CCTPEI. Options include full or provisional registration, Labour Mobility Transfer, or Special Registration for short-term work. To be eligible, applicants must have current registration in good standing from another Canadian jurisdiction and carry $2M in professional liability insurance.
Registration benefits include the ability to use the title "Counselling Therapist," no client number limits, and support from CCTPEI resources. Non-registrants must inform clients about complaint procedures and the limitations of CCTPEI oversight.
